Hurulu Eco Park
The rainy-season backup, a few minutes from Habarana, with the cheapest tickets.
Hurulu Eco Park is a forest reserve just north of Habarana town. It's run by the Forest Department, not the wildlife department, which is why the ticket is much cheaper.
In the wet months, when the big parks are full of water and the elephants spread out, many of them head into Hurulu's forest. The groups are smaller, but you often get closer to them, and there are far fewer jeeps.
When should I go?
Usually December to April. It's the go-to park in the rainy season, when Minneriya and Kaudulla are quieter.
What's it like?
More trees, more bushes, more bumps. You won't see huge herds on open grass like at Minneriya, but you'll feel like you're really in the jungle. It's a great choice if you don't like crowds.
Is it a real protected area?
Yes. Hurulu Forest Reserve was named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977. That means it's recognised around the world as an important place for nature.

Best: July to September. Home of the Gathering, where hundreds of elephants meet on the grass.
Kaudulla
Best: October to December. Where the herds go next, when Minneriya fills up with rain.
Gal Oya
Best: All year (drier months are easiest). A wild, far-away park around Sri Lanka's biggest lake. Hardly any crowds.
