Gal Oya National Park
A wild, far-away park around Sri Lanka's biggest lake. Hardly any crowds.
Gal Oya is on the east side of Sri Lanka, near Ampara. It's built around Senanayake Samudraya, the biggest lake in the country.
It's a long way from Habarana, around 3.5 to 4 hours by road, so this isn't a quick add-on to a Minneriya trip. But if you want a wild park with almost no other jeeps, it's worth it.
Heads up: Gal Oya is about 3.5 to 4 hours from Habarana. Pickup from the Cultural Triangle isn't included. We meet you near the park.
How do I get there?
Our jeep meets you at the Inginiyagala entrance or at a hotel close to the park. Pickup from Habarana, Sigiriya or Dambulla isn't included because it's so far. Message us and we'll help you plan the trip there.
Jeep or boat?
Gal Oya is famous for boat safaris, where you can sometimes watch elephants swim between islands. We run the jeep safari. If you want a boat trip too, ask us and we'll point you to the right people.
What will I see?
Elephants, deer, wild buffalo, crocodiles and lots of birds. The land is hilly and green, and it feels very far from the tourist crowds.

Best: October to December. Where the herds go next, when Minneriya fills up with rain.
Hurulu
Best: December to April. The rainy-season backup, a few minutes from Habarana, with the cheapest tickets.
