The Gathering: hundreds of elephants in one place
It's one of the biggest meetings of wild Asian elephants anywhere in the world, and it happens every year, just outside Habarana.
What is the Gathering?
In the dry months, the big lake in Minneriya park slowly shrinks. Fresh green grass grows on the land where the water used to be. Elephants from all the forests around come to eat it, drink, bathe and meet each other.
At the peak, you can see 100 to 300 elephants on the grass at the same time: babies, mums, aunties, teenagers play-fighting, and big bulls wandering between the groups.
When is it?
Usually July to September, with August and September often the biggest. It depends on the rain. If the rain comes early, the herds can move to Kaudulla sooner.
What time of day?
Go in the afternoon. The elephants spend the hot part of the day in the forest and walk out onto the grass from around 3 pm. The park closes at 6 pm.
How to make the most of it
- Book the afternoon safari. That's when the herds are out.
- Leave early. Afternoon ticket queues can be long in peak season. We time your pickup to get ahead of the rush.
- Bring your passport. Every foreign visitor needs one at the ticket office.
- Bring binoculars and a zoom lens if you have them. Jeeps must keep a safe distance.
- Be quiet and patient. The best moments come when everyone switches off and waits.
